Romans 1:13 says "hold to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in faith and love that are in Christ." In other places the Apostle Paul admonishes his listeners to not be swayed, or led astray by strange teachings, to hold to the Word of God.
Evidently the spreading of a false gospel that sounds good is not a new issue, but it is an issue for believers today. So many people are taking one or two verses out of context and creating doctrine that just isn't sound when compared to the whole of the Word of God. Some people don't even pretend to back it up with Scripture! They just make up something that is a spin off of an exsisting doctrine and people follow it!
It is time that we, as believers, start stduying God's WOrd and know what it says! There are many people that talk a good talk, but have no roots to hold to when they are led astray...As believers we need to be memorizing the Word, reading it for ourselves and checking out anything someone tells us is there...we should not trust that everyone who says "thus saith the Lord," or "the Bible says," actually knows what they are talking about! We are responsible for what we choose to believe and follow! Don't be fooled, know your Word, be prepared to give an answer, Stand on what God Reveals as truth to you!
“While we were still helpless [powerless to provide for our salvation], at the right time Christ died [as a substitute] for the ungodly. Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to willingly give his life even for an upright man, though perhaps for a good man [one who is noble and selfless and worthy] someone might even dare to die. But God clearly shows and proves His own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” -Romans 5:6-8
